The proceedings at the Hamburg District Court concerning Christina Block, a prominent entrepreneur and restaurateur, have been interrupted. This suspension occurs as the court assesses whether Block's children can participate in the trial as co-plaintiffs. The next scheduled session is set for July 25, although the trial may face an extended delay.
Initially, a statement from the defendant was expected on the day of the interruption. The trial arises from allegations surrounding the abduction of Block's two children during the transition from New Year's Eve 2023 to 2024. Christina Block is accused of orchestrating this kidnapping, a claim she vehemently denies, asserting that her ex-husband, Stephan Hensel, has alienated the children from her and has manipulated them.
Earlier, both children were designated as co-plaintiffs, but the Hamburg Higher Regional Court recently revoked the co-plaintiff status of their eleven-year-old son following a request from Block's defense team. At that time, no justification for this decision was provided, but it was later clarified during the court's recent session.
According to a court spokesperson, there are concerns regarding the legitimacy of the co-plaintiff designation, specifically whether Hensel, who retains custody, had the authority to legally represent the children or appoint their legal representatives. Additionally, it is being investigated if an apparent conflict of interest exists, particularly since Hensel is also facing criminal charges.
The situation is further complicated by the impending testimony of Block's fourteen-year-old daughter, which has drawn objections from the defense. The case centers around the alleged kidnapping of the children by Hensel, who transported them from Denmark through Southern Germany back to Hamburg. The defense argues that Hensel's actions have unjustly influenced the children's perspectives against their mother, casting doubt on the reliability of their potential testimonies.
On the day of the trial's interruption, multiple defense attorneys requested a pause in the proceedings. They also sought to include the complete court records concerning Hensel and his new partner, which are related to a separate yet relevant case at the same court. In this other case, Hensel faces accusations of child abduction, as he reportedly kept the children in Denmark for over two years despite Christina Block holding custody rights.
The prosecution has also introduced a significant amount of new evidence that may require additional time to review, potentially prolonging the trial.
