Berlin/Dortmund - Recent statistics reveal a shocking rise in violent crimes at train stations across Germany, with the Berlin Hauptbahnhof recording 715 incidents in the past year. Despite this alarming figure, it ranks third nationwide in terms of violence.
The main culprit appears to be the Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, where a staggering 764 acts of violence were reported in 2024, according to government data obtained in response to an inquiry by the AfD party. This station serves around 80,000 passengers daily, as noted by Deutsche Bahn.
Following Dortmund, the Munich Hauptbahnhof reported 735 violent crimes last year, with a daily footfall of approximately 264,000 travelers. These figures stem from a separate report by the government in response to a CDU/CSU inquiry.
Other notable stations include the Cologne Hauptbahnhof, which witnessed 682 incidents among its daily 180,000 passengers, and the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with 546 occurrences at a higher daily volume of 345,000 travelers. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof also reported 534 violent acts, accommodating around 277,000 passengers each day.
The overall trend indicates a nationwide increase in violent crimes at train stations. In total, 27,160 offenses were recorded last year, up from 25,640 in 2023. The number of sexual offenses surged from 1,898 to 2,262, and incidents of property damage rose from 30,961 to 32,671.
These statistics are drawn from the Police Crime Statistics, which record offenses once reported to law enforcement, suggesting an unreported number of incidents may exist.
In light of these alarming trends, Alexander Throm, the interior policy spokesperson for the CDU, expressed concern about the growing perception of train stations and trains as places of fear. He emphasized the need for immediate action to restore public safety and confidence.
It is crucial to address these trends to ensure that public transportation remains a safe and reliable option for all citizens.
