In a devastating incident that has shocked a nation, the death toll from a fire at a nightclub in North Macedonia has risen to 60. The tragedy unfolded in the small town of Kocani, located approximately 100 kilometers east of the capital, Skopje, during the night of March 15-16. The flames ignited when a spark machine used for a stage performance ignited the easily combustible ceiling materials.

The most recent victim of this catastrophic event was the nightclub's manager, who succumbed to severe burn injuries while receiving treatment in a hospital in Lithuania. This unfortunate development has prompted health officials to announce that the total number of fatalities has now reached 60, up from the 59 confirmed shortly after the fire.

In the immediate aftermath of the blaze, around 200 individuals suffered injuries, with 115 of them requiring urgent medical attention that local facilities were unable to provide. Many of the injured were transported to hospitals in northern European countries such as Lithuania and Sweden for specialized care.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the nightclub had not adhered to essential fire safety regulations, raising serious questions about the establishment's operational permits. As a result, the public prosecutor's office has initiated an inquiry into the matter, focusing on dozens of individuals believed to be complicit in the lapses that led to the tragedy.

The fire has ignited discussions about the importance of strict compliance with safety standards in public venues, as well as the necessity for effective emergency response protocols. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, the government is under pressure to ensure that such a disaster does not happen again.
