Mon 21st Apr, 2025

The Easter weekend turned disastrous for many families in Australia as a total of seven individuals lost their lives due to drowning incidents along the coast. The majority of the fatalities occurred in New South Wales, where six people drowned, including a nine-year-old boy, marking the highest recorded number of drownings during the Easter holiday in this state.

On Sunday, the young boy was reportedly playing on rocks that were being washed by waves in South West Rocks, located between Sydney and Brisbane, when he became trapped. Despite the efforts of rescue teams to free him, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

In a separate incident, a fisherman was swept off a rock by waves in southern Sydney and drowned. Furthermore, a 24-year-old man remains missing after a similar accident in a Sydney suburb on Good Friday.

The state of Victoria also reported a drowning; a woman was swept into the ocean while walking near Phillip Island.

Rescue teams have been actively engaged since Friday, utilizing helicopters and other resources to assist those in peril. Over 100 individuals were successfully rescued from the water during this period.

Officials have expressed deep concern regarding the high number of incidents, prompting calls for increased awareness and caution among beachgoers during holiday periods. The Surf Life Saving NSW organization emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly as many Australians flock to the beaches for leisure during such times.

As the community mourns these tragic losses, authorities urge everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying outdoor activities, especially near water. The weekend's events serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with coastal activities and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
