Traffic Turmoil in Berlin: Essential Updates for Commuters

Sun 30th Mar, 2025

Commuting in Berlin has become increasingly challenging as congestion and delays plague the city's transportation network. Recent developments have intensified the situation, with bridges being closed, S-Bahn routes being redirected, and U-Bahn lines experiencing service reductions.

The latest disruption involves the unexpected closure of the A100 bridge at the Funkturm interchange, a crucial junction for both local and through traffic. Currently, vehicles heading north can use only one lane on the opposing carriageway, leading to significant delays, especially during peak hours. Heavy goods vehicles are advised to take alternative routes to avoid congestion.

In addition to road traffic, the S-Bahn services are affected due to safety concerns, as trains can no longer pass beneath the bridge. The closure impacts the vital Ringbahn line and the S46 line, which connects Königs Wusterhausen in Brandenburg with Westend in Berlin. Passengers now need to travel only as far as Berlin-Bundesplatz, with no clear timeline available for when the service will resume its full route.

On the A115, commuters from Potsdam-Babelsberg heading into Berlin face similar frustrations. A major construction project has reduced the number of available lanes to one between the state border at Kreuz Zehlendorf and the Berlin exit at Spanische Allee. This construction is expected to continue until July 2026, with additional lane closures complicating the situation further. Long traffic jams are a common sight, particularly during rush hour.

The infrastructure at Berlin Hauptbahnhof has also been impacted, with only half of the available tracks operational since mid-February. These works are scheduled to finish by April 22, affecting regional train services, including the RB23 line which now operates bi-hourly instead of hourly between Potsdam-Griebnitzsee and Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

In the northern part of the city, another construction project has commenced, leading to the complete closure of the Wollankstraße stop for S-Bahn lines S1, S25, and S85 until March 2027. Passengers who need to exit at Wollankstraße must now disembark at Schönholz and backtrack, while those boarding must travel to Bornholmer Straße and switch platforms.

Furthermore, significant changes have been implemented on key U-Bahn routes due to ongoing construction. The U2 line, which typically runs from Ruhleben to Pankow, is now temporarily replaced by the U12 line until June 5, providing service only between Ruhleben and Warschauer Straße. The U3 line's service has been shortened, and the U1 line has been restricted to operating between Uhlandstraße and Wittenbergplatz, further extending travel times for commuters.

Commuters in northern Berlin have become accustomed to the extended disruption on the U6 line, which is currently replaced by bus services between Tegel and Kurt-Schumacher-Platz due to ongoing track construction since November 2022. The anticipated resumption of U-Bahn services on this route is not expected before 2026.

As construction and maintenance efforts continue across the city, commuters are advised to plan their journeys carefully, allowing for additional travel time and potential disruptions.
