Traffic Disruption Expected Amid Strike and Highway Closure

Thu 20th Mar, 2025

Commuters in Berlin are bracing for significant traffic disruptions today as a strike by public transport workers coincides with a full closure of a major highway bridge. The BVG strike has halted most of the public transport services, including U-Bahn trains, trams, and the majority of buses, leading to increased congestion on the roads.

The traffic information center has warned that motorists should anticipate longer travel times, with an additional ten minutes expected during peak hours. However, the full impact of the strike on commuter traffic remains to be seen, as the morning rush has yet to fully commence.

The closure of the Ringbahn bridge on the A100, which began on Wednesday evening, is anticipated to exacerbate the situation. Authorities have indicated that extensive traffic jams and detours are likely in the vicinity. A construction traffic management plan has been initiated to redirect vehicles, but the situation is expected to remain challenging.

While the S-Bahn services that run beneath the bridge continue to operate without interruption, the overall traffic management is under strain. A spokesperson from the traffic information center noted that the complete closure of the bridge could lead to even longer delays, reminiscent of previous incidents when the bridge was partially open, causing delays of up to 50 minutes for drivers.

In light of the expected chaos, Ute Bonde, the Traffic Senator, has advised commuters to seek alternative routes and consider using S-Bahn and regional trains if possible. She assured the public that the Autobahn GmbH and relevant transport officials are actively exploring potential detours, although the geography of the area limits available options.

The need for the bridge's closure stems from recent inspections revealing that a known crack in a load-bearing component has worsened, rendering the structure unsafe for vehicular traffic. The Autobahn GmbH has stated that the closure is essential for public safety, following earlier assessments that allowed only limited traffic.

Commuters are advised to remain vigilant and plan their journeys accordingly as the city grapples with the combined effects of the strike and infrastructure issues.
