Toyota Boosts Electric Vehicle Lineup: New Models Set to Compete in Europe

Mon 19th May, 2025

Toyota is intensifying its presence in the electric vehicle market by launching several new models aimed at European consumers. As competitors grapple with the implications of their electric strategies, Toyota is accelerating its production and introducing fresh electric vehicles, including a versatile crossover wagon and a compact electric SUV designed for urban environments.

The new models are intended to bolster Toyota's market share in Europe, where competition with established brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Renault is fierce.

bZ4X Touring: A Unique Blend of Wagon and SUV

The bZ4X Touring is set to appeal to European drivers who prioritize versatility and ample storage space. With a length of 4.83 meters and a trunk capacity of 600 liters, it offers significantly more room compared to the standard bZ4X model. This vehicle will be powered by either a 165 kW (224 hp) front motor or a 280 kW (380 hp) all-wheel drive system, featuring a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery capable of achieving a WLTP range of up to 560 kilometers. The market introduction in Europe is slated for the first half of 2026, positioning it as a competitor to the VW ID.7 Tourer and BMW i5 Touring.

Urban Cruiser: Compact Electric SUV for City Life

The Urban Cruiser makes a comeback as a smaller electric SUV, measuring 3.93 meters in length. This new entry is built on a platform specifically designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Customers will have the option of two battery sizes: 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Depending on the variant, the Urban Cruiser will deliver between 106 kW (144 hp) and 135 kW (184 hp), with ranges of up to 330 km and 370 km, respectively. The model is expected to launch in Germany during the summer of 2025, with starting prices around EUR29,990. However, the all-wheel drive option is anticipated to be a more expensive addition, starting at approximately EUR42,990.

The introduction of these new electric vehicles will complement an existing crossover that is currently available with traditional combustion engines.

Strengthening Market Position

In the past year, Toyota has seen its sales in Europe rise to nearly 1.22 million vehicles, solidifying its status as the second-largest automaker on the continent, trailing only Volkswagen. The Yaris Cross has become particularly popular, with 194,006 units sold in 2024, contributing to Toyota's success in the market.

Despite a stagnating automobile market in Germany, Toyota has achieved a 27% increase in passenger car sales, totaling 95,515 units. With the rollout of the bZ4X Touring and Urban Cruiser, Toyota aims to further enhance its electric vehicle offerings and position itself as a formidable player in the EV sector.
