Threats Against Mayor Arise from Dog Seizure Controversy

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

In Magdeburg, Germany, a series of threatening graffiti messages have emerged throughout the city, directed at the local mayor and officials, igniting concern among residents. The graffiti, which includes ominous drawings and messages, has surfaced in prominent locations such as the Old Market and University Square, with expressions of anger linked to the seizure of a Rehpinscher dog named Ben.

The graffiti features disturbing imagery, including stick figures depicted hanging from gallows, alongside threatening phrases targeting Mayor Simone Borris and her colleagues. Initial investigations by law enforcement suggested that these messages might be tied to broader issues linked to past violent events in the area. However, further examination revealed that the graffiti contained specific references to the dog, with phrases like "Free Bam Ben" and "Free Bam Bam" alongside more menacing words.

Ben, also known affectionately as Bam, was confiscated by the city's regulatory authorities two years ago due to a prior dog ownership ban imposed on his owner, Florian Theumer, following an incident in 2007 where a dog owned by Theumer bit a police officer. Despite the ban, Theumer acquired Ben, leading to significant legal disputes and ongoing tensions with city officials.

Theumer has been fighting for the return of his pet since 2023. The recent graffiti incidents mark a new escalation in the ongoing dispute, raising alarm among officials, particularly as some of the threats were found near the office of the city's regulatory department. Mayor Borris has expressed her determination not to be intimidated by these threats, emphasizing her commitment to public safety and order.

In response to the allegations, Theumer has denied involvement in the graffiti incidents, asserting that he has not engaged in any vandalism. He claims that while he has supporters advocating for his cause through online petitions and flyers, he is not responsible for the threatening messages. Theumer stated that he has not been contacted by the police for any discussions regarding the threats, despite being implicated.

This situation raises critical questions regarding the extent of public sentiment surrounding animal rights and the administrative handling of dog ownership laws. As the community grapples with these issues, officials are urged to address the underlying tensions in a constructive manner to ensure both public safety and the welfare of pets.
