A severe fire broke out in a residential building in the Falkenhagener Feld district of Berlin-Spandau, resulting in extensive damage and leaving numerous residents temporarily without homes. The incident, which occurred overnight, required the immediate intervention of emergency services, including a large deployment of firefighters and rescue personnel.

According to official reports, the fire originated in an apartment located on the fourth floor of the multi-story building. Rapid response by the Berlin Fire Department helped contain the blaze, but not before significant harm was caused. Nineteen apartments in the building were rendered uninhabitable due to the fire and subsequent smoke infiltration. Residents were evacuated swiftly to prevent further injuries.

The most severe casualty was a 68-year-old woman, identified as the occupant of the apartment where the fire started. She managed to escape to a neighboring balcony but suffered life-threatening injuries, including trauma to the head and hands. Due to the severity of her condition, she was airlifted by rescue helicopter to a specialized medical facility. Two additional residents--a woman and a man--sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

In total, 48 people were evacuated from the affected building. Due to the considerable number of individuals requiring assistance, the emergency services activated a protocol designed for mass casualty incidents. The evacuated residents were temporarily sheltered in buses provided by the local public transport authority while firefighters conducted operations to ventilate and secure the premises.

Firefighters had to forcibly enter several apartments as smoke had spread beyond the initial fire location, necessitating a room-by-room search to ensure no one remained inside and to mitigate further risk. The firefighting operation involved 85 personnel and was supported by additional emergency vehicles and medical teams.

The building also houses a care facility, raising particular concerns for the welfare of vulnerable residents. However, no additional serious injuries were reported among those receiving care at the site.

In response to the fire, the building's electricity supply was disconnected to ensure the safety of both residents and emergency responders. Local authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the cause of the fire, currently treating the incident as a case of suspected negligent arson. Further examinations are underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the rapid spread of the blaze.

The event highlights the importance of fire safety measures and rapid emergency response in densely populated residential areas. Local agencies are working to provide temporary housing and support for those displaced by the incident. Updates on the investigation and the recovery of affected residents are expected as authorities continue their inquiries.
