New Electronic Travel Authorization Required for UK Travel Starting in April

Wed 5th Mar, 2025

Travelers planning visits to the United Kingdom, whether for a holiday in London or exploring the Highlands, should be aware of new requirements effective this April. Beginning today, individuals from EU countries can apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which will be mandatory for entry into the UK starting April 2.

As of now, a valid passport will no longer suffice for entry. The ETA serves as a digital pre-screening tool designed for those wishing to enter the UK without a visa. The application fee is currently set at approximately EUR12, with an anticipated increase to about EUR19 in the coming months.

The application process includes answering various safety-related questions and providing personal information such as home address and employment details. Furthermore, applicants must upload a copy of their passport and a facial photograph for those aged over nine. The UK Home Office recommends using their official app for this process, although applicants can also utilize a computer through the designated website.

The UK government aims to enhance security measures through this initiative, which will include checks for criminal records among applicants. A successfully obtained ETA allows the holder to make multiple trips to the UK, with each visit lasting up to six months within a two-year validity period. It is crucial that the passport remains valid throughout this timeframe.

As the ETA system is implemented, travelers are encouraged to prepare for this new requirement to ensure a smooth entry into the United Kingdom in the upcoming months.
