Tesla Sales Plummet by Up to 64% in France and Sweden Amid Controversies

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

Tesla's sales figures have taken a significant hit in France and Sweden, with recent data showing dramatic declines in the number of vehicles sold. In March, the electric vehicle manufacturer experienced a nearly 37% drop in France, with only 3,157 units sold, marking a stark contrast to previous months. In Sweden, the situation is even more severe, with sales plummeting by 64%, resulting in just 911 deliveries.

This downturn in sales is the most pronounced the company has faced in these markets in four years. Comparatively, Norway's market remained relatively stable, with approximately 2,200 electric cars sold, a mere 1% decrease from the prior year.

Analysts attribute the declining sales numbers to various factors, not least the controversial political stances taken by CEO Elon Musk. His vocal support for certain political ideologies and affiliations has reportedly alienated some consumers in both France and Sweden. According to industry experts, this shift in public perception is weighing heavily on Tesla's brand image.

Protests against Tesla in response to Musk's political views have manifested in acts of vandalism targeting the company's vehicles and showrooms across both the United States and Europe, with recent incidents occurring in cities such as Berlin and Rome. These actions have led Musk to label such behavior as 'terrorism.'

Furthermore, Tesla is grappling with challenges beyond its leadership's public image. The company faces stiff competition from emerging electric vehicle manufacturers, particularly in China, as well as the implications of increasing tariffs associated with the ongoing global trade tensions. Analysts suggest that the company is at a critical juncture, particularly with the recent launch of its revamped Model Y, which is crucial for regaining market traction in both Europe and China.

Looking ahead, Tesla is set to release its global sales figures on Wednesday, with analysts predicting an overall decrease of approximately 3.5%. As the automotive market continues to evolve, the company must navigate these turbulent waters to maintain its position as a leader in electric vehicle sales.
