Commencement of Tender Process for New Ringbahn Bridge as Demolition Begins

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

In a significant development for Berlin's infrastructure, the demolition of the deteriorating Ringbahn Bridge over the A110 commenced today, coinciding with the initiation of the tendering process for its replacement. The project, overseen by the project management company Deges, aims to expedite the construction of a new bridge to minimize disruptions for S-Bahn services and local traffic.

During an informational session held for affected businesses by the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Technical Managing Director of Deges, Andreas Irngartinger, highlighted that the primary criterion for awarding the contract will be the reduction of construction time and the mitigation of impacts on public transport. The goal is to finalize the contract by summer, although the specific timelines for the onset of construction and project completion remain uncertain.

"Speed is of the essence," stated Irngartinger, emphasizing the importance of this project as a showcase of the construction industry's innovative capabilities and efficiency. The Ringbahn Bridge, located at the Funkturm interchange, was closed to vehicle traffic in mid-March due to a severe structural crack that posed safety risks. Following this, S-Bahn operations were also suspended beneath the bridge.

The demolition, expected to last until April 25, will clear the way for the new structure, allowing S-Bahn trains to resume service shortly thereafter. In the interim, traffic has been diverted to a single lane on the opposite side of the highway, with heavy trucks facing longer detours due to the closure. The initial days of the closure were marked by significant traffic disruptions around the Funkturm interchange.

Additionally, the nearby Westend Bridge, located further north, is also scheduled for demolition in the coming weeks, compounding the traffic challenges in the area. For those interested in following the progress of the demolition, the Autobahn GmbH is providing live updates via a YouTube stream.
