Increase in Online Crimes Targeting Children and Adolescents

Tue 20th May, 2025

The prevalence of online crimes directed at children and adolescents has escalated significantly, with a troubling rise in hate speech and sexual violence reported. According to the latest annual report from the competence center Jugendschutz.net, there were 17,630 violations of youth media protection documented last year, more than double the number recorded in previous years.

A striking 90 percent of these cases were related to sexualized violence, raising serious concerns among authorities. The Federal Minister for Youth expressed alarm over the figures, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced protective measures.

Experts indicate that the rise in reported incidents can be attributed to an increase in the number of alerts received regarding potential abuses. Additionally, the internet has become a more accessible platform for individuals seeking to exploit minors, particularly through social media channels, making it easier to lure children and adolescents into harmful situations.

Stefan Glaser, the head of Jugendschutz.net, emphasized the alarming trend, asserting that the growing number of cases is a reflection of the challenges faced in safeguarding young individuals online. The organization has been actively working to address these issues and improve the reporting and prevention mechanisms available to protect minors.

The rising statistics indicate a critical need for collaborative efforts among parents, educators, and policymakers to create a safer online environment. Strategies such as improved monitoring of online interactions, education on digital safety for young users, and stricter regulations on social media platforms could be vital in combating this disturbing trend.

As society continues to adapt to the rapid evolution of technology, the protection of children and adolescents in the digital space remains a paramount concern. Awareness campaigns and educational initiatives are essential to empower young individuals with the knowledge and tools to navigate online spaces safely.

This report serves as a call to action for all stakeholders involved in the welfare of minors to unite in tackling the increasing threat of online crimes. Ongoing vigilance and proactive measures are imperative to foster a secure digital environment for future generations.
