Suella Braverman, a former Home Secretary and current member of the UK Parliament, has announced her departure from the Conservative Party to join Reform UK, a political party led by Nigel Farage. This move marks a significant shift in the British political landscape, as Reform UK continues to attract notable figures from the right wing of the Conservative Party.
Braverman, who served as Home Secretary from 2022 to 2023, is among several members of parliament to recently leave the Conservatives for Reform UK. Reform UK, currently the fourth-largest party in the House of Commons, has seen a rise in national polling, gaining ground on both the governing Labour Party and the Conservatives as voter dissatisfaction grows.
At a public event attended by military veterans, Braverman expressed her reasons for joining Reform UK, referencing a desire to address what she described as the country's ongoing challenges. She highlighted the party's policies on national identity, migration, and the importance of British history and traditions. Braverman also underscored her personal connection to the values represented by the party, drawing on her own background and prior experience in government.
Her decision to switch parties comes at a time when the UK's two main political parties are experiencing declining support. The Conservative Party has struggled to recover after a significant electoral defeat in 2024, ending nearly 15 years in power. Meanwhile, the Labour Party, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has also faced a decline in popularity during his first year and a half in office.
In recent months, Reform UK has welcomed several high-profile defectors from the Conservatives. The list includes former Chancellor Nadim Zahawi, ex-Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, former deputy chairman Lee Anderson, Danny Kruger, who served as a public secretary to Boris Johnson, and Andrea Jenkyns, the current mayor of Greater Lincolnshire. Additionally, Robert Jenrick, another senior Conservative, was removed from the party after indications that he was planning to leave for Reform UK.
Braverman's move is particularly noteworthy given her previous role as Home Secretary, where she was known for her firm stance on migration and border control. Her tenure ended after disagreements with the party's approach to the European Convention on Human Rights, with Braverman advocating for the UK to leave the convention to enhance its control over immigration policies. This position aligns with Reform UK's stated intent to withdraw from the convention if it attains power.
Born in the United Kingdom to parents of Mauritian and Indian descent, Braverman entered politics after a career in law. Her transition to Reform UK is expected to further bolster the party's profile, especially among voters seeking alternatives to the established parties.
The recent influx of former Conservative members into Reform UK reflects a broader trend of realignment within British politics. As longstanding parties face growing criticism over their handling of key national issues, emerging parties like Reform UK are capitalizing on public dissatisfaction. With general elections on the horizon, the shifting allegiances are likely to play a critical role in shaping the country's political future.
