The former Stasi bunker located near Berlin, a relic of the Cold War, is set to reopen for public tours following its winter hiatus. This site offers visitors valuable insights into the operations of the DDR's foreign intelligence service, particularly focusing on the Main Administration for Reconnaissance (HVA), which ceased operations 35 years ago, marking the end of East Germany's international espionage efforts.
Organized by the Bunker Documentation Association, the tours aim to highlight previously classified documents pertaining to the HVA's activities and discuss the historical context of the site, which was abandoned after the reunification of Germany in 1990. Jörg Diester from the association indicated that the tours would include discussions on the complex legal status of the bunker in the years following the DDR's dissolution, when numerous claims for ownership and usage arose.
Starting from the first weekend in March, the bunker will host tours every four weeks until November. It is expected that around 500 individuals will participate in the approximately 50 tours offered annually. Originally constructed in 1984 at the behest of Markus Wolf, the head of foreign intelligence for the Stasi, the bunker served as a contingency command center for overseeing espionage operations abroad.
In the years following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the facility remained unoccupied for an extended period. Since 2019, however, it has transformed into a historical learning center. Reports indicate that approximately 3,000 visitors have explored the site since its reopening, eager to learn more about its past and the technology used during the DDR era. Tours can be booked online, allowing interested parties to delve into the history and technological advancements of the bunker.
