Reimagining Healthcare: Starmer Proposes Overhaul of NHS England

Fri 14th Mar, 2025

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has announced a significant restructuring of the National Health Service (NHS) in England, stating that NHS England will be entirely dissolved. The responsibilities currently held by this body will be transferred to the Department of Health, aiming to eliminate redundant administrative layers and streamline operations. Starmer emphasized that by making this change, funds can be redirected towards essential healthcare services, specifically focusing on treatment.

NHS England is tasked with managing the budget, planning, and day-to-day operations of the NHS, which serves as the publicly funded healthcare system for residents in England. It currently employs approximately 15,300 personnel, while the Department of Health employs around 3,300. Health Minister Wes Streeting indicated in Parliament that nearly half of the jobs in both organizations might be cut as part of this initiative, which is projected to save hundreds of millions of pounds.

The NHS, recognized as Europe's largest employer with over 1.3 million staff, provides mostly free healthcare to all legal residents in the UK.

In addition to the NHS reforms, Starmer is advocating for a leaner government structure overall. He pointed out that there are excessive regulatory bodies and requirements for businesses, and he aims to reduce barriers for new housing projects.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as a key opportunity for enhancing governmental efficiency. Starmer stated that implementing AI solutions could lead to savings of £45 billion (approximately EUR53.7 billion). He announced plans to deploy teams across various government departments with a specific mission to foster innovation and improve efficiency.
