Stadler Secures Commitment for Berlin-Pankow Facility Until 2032

The future of the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler's facility in Berlin-Pankow has been secured until 2032 following a recent agreement between the company and the IG Metall union. This decision comes in light of the company's current economic challenges, despite a strong order backlog.

To maintain operations, employees will face an increase in their working hours from 38 to 40 hours per week, temporarily without additional pay. This adjustment was deemed necessary as Stadler navigates the financial pressures stemming from ongoing supply chain disruptions and rising costs for energy and raw materials, largely attributed to the war in Ukraine.

The Pankow site, which employs approximately 2,000 individuals, is responsible for producing the new J/JK series of subway trains for the Berlin Transport Company (BVG). The agreement is seen as a positive outcome, providing a clear long-term perspective for the facility and its workforce.

Union representatives expressed satisfaction with the negotiations, emphasizing that the location guarantee signifies a commitment to the future of Stadler in Berlin. However, the initial years will require adjustments for employees, including the extended working hours.

Stadler Germany's management acknowledged the significant demands placed on employees due to these changes but expressed relief that more drastic measures, such as partial plant closures or wage cuts, could be avoided.
