SPD Proposes Increased Health Contributions for High Earners

The financial situation of statutory health insurance funds in Germany has become increasingly strained. In response, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is initiating discussions around the possibility of raising the contribution assessment ceiling for high earners by approximately EUR2,500.

Christos Pantazis, the health policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, suggested in a recent interview that aligning the contribution ceiling with that of the pension insurance system could provide significant financial relief for health insurers without imposing excessive burdens on insured individuals.

Currently, the contribution assessment ceiling for health insurance stands at EUR5,512.50, while the ceiling for pension insurance is set at EUR8,050. An increase in this threshold would mean that high earners would contribute a larger portion of their income towards health insurance, potentially leading to increased revenue for health funds.

Pantazis emphasized the need for open discussions regarding all relevant measures to stabilize the finances of statutory health insurance (GKV). He noted that this should include a dynamic adjustment of federal subsidies as well as a critical assessment of non-insurance-related benefits.

There is also support for this proposal from Janosch Dahmen, the health policy spokesperson for the Greens. He advocates for a gradual increase of the contribution assessment limit alongside the insurance obligation threshold, bringing them closer to the levels established in the statutory pension insurance system.

The proposal has received backing from the Social Association Germany (SoVD), with chairperson Michaela Engelmeier stating that the organization has long called for an adjustment to the insurance obligation limits. She welcomed the SPD's initiative as a positive step towards achieving this goal.

This ongoing dialogue highlights the challenges faced by Germany's healthcare funding system and the need for potential reforms to ensure its sustainability and efficiency.
