Spanish King Advocates for a Stronger Europe at Karlspreis Ceremony

Thu 29th May, 2025

In a significant address during the Karlspreis award ceremony in Aachen, Spanish King Felipe VI. emphasized the necessity for a more united Europe, dismissing calls for the disbandment of the European Union. The event honored Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, with the prestigious Karlspreis, which recognizes outstanding contributions to European unity.

During his speech, King Felipe pointedly rejected the notion that Europeans would be better off living in isolated national communities. He argued that such a perspective is misguided and poses a danger to the collective interests of the continent. The King insisted that the complexities of global challenges necessitate cooperation among European nations rather than a retreat into nationalism.

Felipe highlighted that a fragmented Europe would render its countries vulnerable to external pressures and unable to effectively address pressing international issues. He articulated that the current geopolitical climate demands a stronger, more cohesive European presence on the global stage. "The international situation calls for more Europe," he asserted, reinforcing his belief that unity is essential for European power and influence.

The Karlspreis, regarded as one of the highest honors for promoting European integration, is awarded to individuals who have significantly contributed to the cause of unity in Europe. Ursula von der Leyen was recognized as a "strong voice for Europe in the world," a testament to her leadership role within the EU.

Historically, the last recipient from the European Commission was Jacques Delors in 1992, celebrated for his pivotal role in establishing the European single market and paving the way for the Euro. The award reflects not only individual achievements but also the collective aspirations of European nations to work collaboratively for stability and prosperity.

As the ceremony concluded, the message from the Spanish monarch resonated widely, underscoring the importance of solidarity among EU member states in the face of rising global challenges. The call for a reinforced European Union is particularly relevant as discussions around national sovereignty and integration continue to evolve.
