Spahn Advocates for a New Approach to AfD in Bundestag

In a recent statement, Jens Spahn, the vice-chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, called for a reevaluation of how the Bundestag interacts with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. He emphasized the need to recognize the significant number of German citizens who have cast their votes for the AfD, which has emerged as the second strongest party in the current parliament.

Spahn pointed out that the political landscape has shifted, and he believes that the Bundestag should treat the AfD as it would any other opposition party. He conveyed the importance of not allowing provocations from the right to derail constructive discourse, suggesting that the approach should be grounded in the acknowledgment of the AfD's electoral support.

"We need to find the right balance," Spahn noted, encouraging fellow politicians to avoid responding impulsively to every challenge posed by AfD representatives. He indicated that a change in tone and interaction in the Bundestag is already visible and may intensify in the future.

He stated that it is crucial to remember that the AfD's strength in parliament reflects a message from voters who wish to be heard. In his remarks, Spahn reiterated his commitment to implementing reforms that would reduce the size of the federal administration by eight percent and cut staffing levels by two percent annually. He also outlined plans to halve the number of governmental representatives.
