SpaceX to Rescue Stranded NASA Astronauts from ISS

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since summer 2024 due to technical issues with their spacecraft. In a recent development, former US President Donald Trump reached out to Elon Musk's SpaceX, urging the company to facilitate an expedited return for the astronauts.

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump expressed his concerns over the astronauts' prolonged stay in space, which he attributed to a lack of action from the current administration. He stated, "I have just asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to bring back the two brave astronauts who have been practically left behind in space by the Biden administration."

This intervention marks a rare instance of a former president directly influencing NASA operations, a move that has reportedly surprised officials within the agency. Efforts to obtain comments from NASA were initially unsuccessful.

The two astronauts initially arrived at the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner shuttle for an eight-day test mission. However, due to complications with the spacecraft's propulsion system, NASA deemed a return to Earth too hazardous at this time. The agency has since planned for the astronauts to return via a SpaceX capsule in March.

Elon Musk, a key advisor to Trump and a prominent entrepreneur, confirmed that he had received the former president's request. He responded affirmatively, stating, "We will do it."
