Sony has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5, marking the second adjustment since its initial launch. Effective April 14, the digital version of the console, which does not include a disc drive, will now retail for EUR500, reflecting a EUR100 increase from its original price at launch.
This decision has been attributed to challenging economic conditions, including high inflation rates and fluctuating currency exchange rates, as stated by the company in an official blog post.
While the price for the digital variant has risen, other models remain unaffected. The disc version of the PS5 continues to be priced at EUR550, and the newly launched PS5 Pro is available for EUR800. Despite the recent increases, the digital version remains the most affordable way to access the current PlayStation ecosystem.
Looking back, the PlayStation 5 Digital was initially priced at EUR400 when it debuted in 2020. A subsequent price increase in 2022 raised it to EUR450, and now the current figure reflects a significant cumulative rise over the years. The console has recently been updated with a 'Slim' variant as well.
It is essential to note that actual retail prices may differ from Sony's recommended pricing. Currently, some retailers still offer the PlayStation 5 Digital for around EUR400, despite the new price announcement. On Sony's official website, the digital console is still listed at EUR450.
In addition to the price changes for the PlayStation 5 in Europe, prices are also increasing in other markets. In the United Kingdom, the digital version will now be priced at £430, and similar adjustments are expected in Australia and New Zealand for both the digital and disc versions.
Interestingly, while the price of the console itself has increased, the cost of the optional external disc drive has decreased. Previously priced at EUR120, it will now be available for EUR80. Consequently, purchasing the digital variant with the external drive will total EUR580, which remains higher than the standard disc version of the PlayStation 5.
