Sonos Announces Layoffs of 200 Employees Amid Restructuring

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

In a significant organizational shift, Sonos has revealed plans to lay off 200 employees as part of a wider restructuring effort aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. This decision was communicated by the interim CEO, who emphasized the need for a more streamlined and focused team structure.

The affected employees have been notified via email regarding their job terminations. The interim CEO highlighted that the restructuring is intended to create 'flatter, smaller, and more focused' teams. He noted that the company had become entangled in excessive layers of management, complicating collaboration and decision-making processes.

This restructuring comes shortly after the resignation of Patrick Spence, the previous CEO, with the interim leader stepping in to navigate this transition. Alongside the layoffs, it has been confirmed that two senior executives will also be departing from their roles within the company.

A considerable portion of the turmoil at Sonos can be traced back to the unsuccessful launch of a new app last May. The revamped application, designed from the ground up, was met with dissatisfaction due to missing features and various bugs, leading to disappointment among users. The original app was subsequently discontinued.

In an effort to address the backlash, Sonos engaged with its community through forums, where employees responded to critical questions and committed to implementing improvements. However, these efforts have not been sufficient to quell the dissatisfaction among users. Statements from the former CEO did little to alleviate the concerns.

Amid these challenges, Sonos is working on introducing a new category of products, including a streaming player expected to be priced between $200 and $400. This move aims to diversify its offerings and regain consumer trust in the wake of recent setbacks.
