Söder Advocates for Swift Implementation of Universal Military Service Amidst Rising Threats

The leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Söder, has reiterated calls for the reinstatement of mandatory military service in Germany, arguing that the current military recruitment strategies are insufficient to deter external threats, particularly from Russia. In a recent interview, he expressed that merely having a voluntary service model, referred to as a 'questionnaire army,' will not suffice to impress upon adversaries such as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Söder highlighted the heightened security concerns faced by NATO member states due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. He stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, 'We cannot afford to delay; a genuine military conscription system is critical for our national defense.' His comments come in light of assessments from military experts indicating that between 2027 and 2029, there could be increased provocations from Russia against NATO.

In his remarks, Söder emphasized the necessity of strengthening Germany's armed forces as a means of safeguarding national freedoms. He pointed out that achieving this goal will require not only an increase in military personnel but also significant financial investment.

The recent legislative proposal approved by the federal cabinet was described by Söder as an inadequate response to the pressing security challenges. He acknowledged that while the new framework for military service is a step in the right direction, it does not meet the comprehensive needs of the Bundeswehr. 'We will not relent in our demands for a robust military presence,' he stated, reflecting a shared sentiment among military personnel regarding the need for enhanced capabilities.

The federal cabinet's recent decision outlines a new military service structure, which introduces the concept of recruiting young men, initially emphasizing voluntary enlistment and an appealing service experience. However, the call for a return to compulsory military service during peacetime--a notion strongly advocated by various members of the opposition--was not included in the final agreement.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU has expressed confidence that the revamped military service framework will attract enough young recruits to meet current defense needs. He conveyed optimism about reaching the necessary recruitment numbers in the near term.
