A devastating incident occurred on Thursday near the popular resort town of Hurghada, where a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives. According to local authorities and rescue teams, the submarine was carrying tourists, primarily from Russia, when it went down. Reports indicate that at least nine individuals sustained injuries, while 29 others were rescued from the vessel.

Although the Egyptian authorities have not yet confirmed the nationalities of the deceased, Viktor Woropajew, the Russian Consul General in Hurghada, stated that four of the victims were Russian tourists. He mentioned that a total of 45 Russian tourists, including children, were on board the submarine at the time of the accident.

The ill-fated submarine, named "Sindbad," was a semi-submersible vessel designed to allow passengers to observe the underwater environment. The tourists had intended to view the region's renowned coral reefs. Reports suggest that the submarine sank near a hotel's yacht harbor, a popular departure point for marine excursions in Hurghada.

Rescue efforts were ongoing as of midday, with a significant response involving 21 ambulances dispatched to the scene. The cause of the sinking remains unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

This incident comes on the heels of a previous maritime disaster in the Red Sea, where a tourist boat sank in November, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including two Germans. The boat, known as the "Sea Story," was reportedly taking tourists to popular diving spots.

Egypt continues to be a favored destination for tourists, particularly during the Easter holiday period, with Tui reporting that it ranks as the third most popular choice among travelers, attracting 13% of holidaymakers.
