Significant Increase in New Electric Vehicle Registrations

Wed 3rd Sep, 2025

The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise impressively, with nearly 39,400 new electric cars registered in Germany last month. This figure represents a remarkable increase of almost 46% compared to the same month last year, as reported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). In August, electric vehicles accounted for approximately 19% of all new car registrations, underscoring the growing acceptance of battery-powered cars among consumers.

Despite the overall surge in EV registrations, notable American automaker Tesla appears to be lagging behind. While competitors from China are increasingly gaining traction in the German market with their electric models, Tesla's sales have sharply declined. Only around 1,400 Tesla vehicles were newly registered in Germany in August, marking a staggering decrease of nearly 40% compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date, Tesla's new registrations have plummeted by 56%.

The overall increase in electric vehicle registrations can also be attributed to a low baseline from the previous year, when EV sales hit a slump due to the removal of incentives.

According to mobility expert Constantin Gall from the consulting firm EY, while the current numbers indicate a rebound, this should not be misconstrued as an electric vehicle boom. The high demand is primarily driven by tax incentives for company cars and significant discounts offered by manufacturers.

In total, around 207,230 passenger cars of all types were registered in Germany last month, which is a 5% increase from August of the previous year. This trend reflects a gradual recovery in the automotive market as it adjusts to changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.
