Sigmar Gabriel, former Vice Chancellor and long-serving member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by Germany's Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The honour recognises Gabriel's significant contributions to fostering strong German-American relations at a time of increased transatlantic challenges.
Gabriel, who previously served as Germany's Foreign Minister, has played a pivotal role in maintaining dialogue between Germany and the United States. As chairperson of Atlantik-Brücke, an organisation dedicated to promoting understanding and cooperation between the two countries, Gabriel has focused on sustaining diplomatic ties amid shifts in US-European relations. The German president emphasised the heightened importance of such efforts as the United States reconsiders its engagement with Europe and the post-war order that historically shaped transatlantic relations.
Gabriel's political career spans several decades and key positions at both the state and federal levels. From 1999 to 2003, he was Minister President of Lower Saxony. He subsequently held several federal ministerial roles, including Minister for the Environment, Minister for Economic Affairs, and Minister for Foreign Affairs. Between 2013 and 2018, Gabriel served as Vice Chancellor under Chancellor Angela Merkel, and from 2009 to 2017, he was also the leader of the SPD.
Alongside Gabriel, several other distinguished figures were recognised with the Federal Cross of Merit for their dedication to democracy, rule of law, and international cooperation. Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, former Federal Minister of Justice representing the Free Democratic Party (FDP), received the award for her advocacy of civil liberties, rule of law, and combating antisemitism. Maria Böhmer, President of the German UNESCO Commission and former Minister of State in the Foreign Office, was honoured for her efforts to support migrants and her commitment to foreign cultural and educational policy. In total, five former politicians were acknowledged for their international political engagement.
The Federal Cross of Merit, officially known as the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, is the nation's highest civilian honour, awarded to individuals who render outstanding services to the public good. The order is structured in eight classes, with the 'Cross of Merit on Ribbon' being the most frequently bestowed. The distinction covers a wide range of areas including social, political, economic, and intellectual achievements that benefit German society and its global relations.
This year's recipients reflect a broad spectrum of contributions, from strengthening democratic institutions to enhancing Germany's presence and influence in international forums. Their collective achievements highlight the importance of resilience and dialogue in times of geopolitical uncertainty. The Federal Cross of Merit continues to serve as a symbol of the country's appreciation for those who advance its core values and interests at home and abroad.
Gabriel's recognition comes amid ongoing discussions about the future of transatlantic relations and the evolving role of Germany within the international community. His leadership within Atlantik-Brücke and his tenure in high governmental office underscore Germany's commitment to upholding partnerships that have defined its post-war foreign policy. The award ceremony also drew attention to the continued need for active engagement in international dialogue and cooperation, particularly as global alliances face new tests.
As Germany honours these individuals, the Federal Cross of Merit reaffirms the nation's dedication to celebrating those who contribute to its democratic fabric and international standing. The recipients' work exemplifies the values of service, dialogue, and commitment to the rule of law that remain central to the Federal Republic's identity.
