Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has extended an invitation to former U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine, urging him to witness firsthand the devastation caused by the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of understanding the impact of the war before engaging in any negotiations.

Zelenskyy expressed his desire for Trump to visit, stating, "We want you to come and see what has happened." He highlighted the dire consequences of the conflict, including the suffering of civilians, soldiers, and the destruction of hospitals and churches. The Ukrainian leader believes that a visit would provide Trump with a clearer perspective on the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Recent events have heightened the urgency of Zelenskyy's request. A recent missile strike in Sumy resulted in the deaths of at least 34 individuals, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by Russian military actions. In light of this tragedy, Zelenskyy reiterated his call for Trump to visit Ukraine.

During the interview, which aired on CBS, Zelenskyy also voiced concerns regarding the long-term commitment of the United States to Ukraine's defense. He acknowledged the U.S. as a strategic ally but indicated that there were growing uncertainties about continued support. "The pause is a doubt," he stated, mentioning that while the American public stands with Ukraine, the details of prolonged conflict may fade from public consciousness.

Zelenskyy noted that he has perceived a shift in the U.S. administration's perspective on the prolonged war, particularly with regard to Vice President JD Vance, with whom he had a contentious exchange during a visit to the White House in February. He emphasized that there is a clear distinction between the aggressor and the victim in the conflict, urging for a more resolute stance against Russian aggression.

Trump has expressed a desire to conclude the conflict and has maintained communication with the Kremlin through his special envoy, Steve Witkoff. Prior to the missile attack on Sumy, Trump indicated that negotiations were progressing positively.
