Schwesig Warns of Rising AfD Support in Western Germany if Coalition Fails

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister-President has issued a strong warning regarding the potential consequences of a failed coalition between the Union and the SPD. She cautions that such a failure could significantly boost the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's support in the western regions of the country.

During preliminary negotiations held behind closed doors in Berlin, the Minister-President emphasized the importance of addressing pressing issues effectively. She noted that if the Democratic parties do not succeed in solving problems better than the current coalition government, the troubling electoral outcomes seen in eastern states could also manifest in the west.

Reflecting on past electoral trends, she remarked that the lack of attention paid to the AfD's results in eastern Germany after the 2021 Bundestag elections was a grave miscalculation that should not be repeated. It is crucial, she stated, that two eastern state leaders participate in the ongoing discussions, highlighting the presence of her counterpart from Saxony.

While she refrained from divulging specific details of the negotiations, she emphasized that the focus should be on building trust and reliability among coalition partners. The past experience of the failed Ampel coalition serves as a reminder that internal disputes can undermine both the parties involved and the democratic process as a whole.

Schwesig called for a collaborative spirit among all parties, urging them to work towards common goals rather than furthering divisions. She also addressed the current financial challenges, asserting that sound fiscal management is essential to support economic development, advance the energy transition, and address significant national security issues.
