Saxony: CDU Approves Coalition Agreement with SPD

Sat 14th Dec, 2024

The Saxon branch of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has officially endorsed the coalition agreement with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) during a special party convention held in Dresden.

This coalition is aimed at establishing a minority government, and the CDU has outlined several priorities it believes are beneficial for the state of Saxony. These include the formation of a dedicated border police, the introduction of a mandatory preschool year, streamlining administrative processes, and making significant investments in infrastructure.

Currently, the SPD is conducting a member survey regarding the coalition agreement, with results expected to be announced on the following Monday. The joint governmental framework was first made public by both parties at the beginning of December.

In the recent state elections held on September 1, the CDU narrowly secured victory over the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Initial discussions between the CDU and SPD also included the Alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). However, these negotiations collapsed due to disagreements on key issues such as peace policy and migration.

Michael Kretschmer, the Minister-President representing the CDU, is set to seek re-election in the state parliament on Wednesday. The proposed coalition, described as a 'black-red' alliance, currently lacks a majority, falling short by ten votes. As a result, the coalition will depend on the participation of additional parties, potentially including the BSW, to secure the necessary support.

This development marks a significant moment in Saxony's political landscape as the parties navigate the complexities of forming a stable government amid a challenging electoral environment.

As the situation unfolds, further updates will be provided regarding the responses from the SPD members as well as the implications of the coalition agreement on Saxony's governance and policy direction.
