Germany's solar energy sector continues to grow, with new data revealing that Bavaria has emerged as the top-performing state in solar electricity generation during the first half of 2026. An extensive analysis based on figures from the German Weather Service and industry evaluations highlights the regional performance of private photovoltaic systems across the country.
According to the latest assessment, a standard residential solar installation with a ten-kilowatt peak (kWp) output in Bavaria produced an estimated 6,089 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from January through June 2026. This output marks a notable rise, placing Bavaria ahead of all other German states and overtaking Saarland, which led the rankings in the previous year. Baden-Württemberg closely follows in second place, with similar systems delivering approximately 6,035 kWh in the same period.
The data further reveals that Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein secured third and fourth positions, generating 5,790 kWh and 5,770 kWh respectively. The performance gap between the top and bottom states remains moderate, with Bavaria producing about nine percent more electricity than Thuringia, which ranks lowest with 5,583 kWh.
For context, the energy generated by a typical Bavarian home solar array during this period would suffice to cover the entire household electricity needs and heat pump usage for a family of four over six months. In addition, the surplus energy could theoretically power an electric vehicle for nearly 9,400 kilometers, provided all generated electricity is either used directly or stored efficiently.
Comprehensive State-by-State Solar Ranking
Across Germany, the average ten-kilowatt system produced 5,735 kWh, placing Bavaria about six percent above the national mean. In terms of carbon footprint, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg also led, with each system helping to avoid around 4.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents, compared to the nationwide average of four tonnes.

Northern States Excel in Peak Solar Month
While southern Germany led in total output over six months, the data highlights that northern states can outperform in individual months. In May, Schleswig-Holstein delivered the highest monthly solar yield, with an average system producing 1,566 kWh. Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania followed, achieving 1,484 kWh and 1,464 kWh respectively in the same month.
These findings demonstrate that optimal solar performance depends not only on geographic latitude but also on factors such as daylight duration, cloud cover, and module temperatures. Longer days and cooler conditions can enhance output, whereas excessive heat may reduce the efficiency of solar panels.
Expansion of Private Solar Installations
Bavaria also leads in the number of private photovoltaic systems installed. As of mid-2026, nearly 1.1 million private systems are registered in the state, with over 37,000 new installations added since the beginning of the year. These figures do not account for smaller balcony systems, focusing instead on home rooftop installations.
Experts emphasize that homeowners are increasingly using their own solar-generated electricity. The adoption of technologies such as battery storage, electric vehicles, and heat pumps is helping to align production with household consumption, potentially easing demand on the grid and maximizing self-sufficiency.
However, the actual financial savings depend on several factors, including the proportion of electricity used on-site, available storage capacity, local electricity tariffs, and compensation for surplus power fed into the grid.

The analysis considered a typical ten-kilowatt peak residential installation and applied standard benchmarks for electricity consumption and electric vehicle efficiency.
