German Transport Minister Demands Improved Railway Punctuality Amid Rising Passenger Numbers

The German railway operator has reported unexpectedly strong financial results for the first half of the year, driven by significant cost reductions and increased demand for train tickets. For the first time in seven years, the rail division has returned to profitability, signaling a positive shift following years of financial losses.

Passenger numbers on trains have experienced a notable increase, reaching approximately 960 million from January to June, which is 17 million more compared to the same period last year. The rise is attributed to higher fuel prices, encouraging commuters to switch from cars to regional trains. Additionally, customers have shown growing interest in special offers, with the new last-minute ticket--priced from seven euros depending on availability--proving particularly popular, attracting around 600,000 travelers in a short time.

Despite these successes, punctuality in long-distance rail services remains a significant challenge, with only 59 percent of trains running on time in the first half of the year. This figure is even lower than the previous year and well below pre-pandemic levels. The average occupancy rate for long-distance trains was 46.7 percent, compared to over 50 percent before the COVID-19 crisis.

The company's net profit after taxes for the first half of the year amounted to 147 million euros, reversing previous years of substantial losses. The operator expects to maintain profitability throughout the year, attributing these improvements to workforce reductions, especially within corporate management and internal services. In the long-distance segment, operating profits reached 148 million euros in the first six months.

The freight division, DB Cargo, continues to struggle amid weak economic conditions but came close to breaking even, posting a loss of just one million euros. The division is undergoing job cuts and faces pressure to achieve profitability this year; failure to do so could prompt intervention from the European Commission, potentially leading to restructuring or even a breakup of the division. Meanwhile, record investments have been made into the aging rail infrastructure in an effort to modernize the network.

The newly appointed Federal Minister of Transport, having recently succeeded his predecessor, has emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure and punctuality. The minister remains optimistic that substantial investments from a special infrastructure and climate neutrality program will visibly enhance roads, bridges, and railways. However, he acknowledged that these upgrades will require time and may result in construction-related disruptions and temporary delays for rail passengers.

Initial impressions of the new minister's approach have been positive, reflecting his previous experience within the transport ministry. The recent improvements in the rail operator's performance are also seen as a validation of immediate action programs launched earlier in the year, which aimed to boost comfort in long-distance trains, enhance station security and cleanliness, and improve customer communication. Furthermore, recent service and comfort assessments, such as those conducted by major automobile associations, have rated the railway operator favorably.
