Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia - The well-known restaurant chain Sausalitos has declared bankruptcy, leading to the closure of its first establishment located on Rüttenscheider Straße in Essen. Initially, the provisional insolvency administrator had indicated that the approximately 40 affected locations would remain operational. However, this particular branch was categorized as a 'special case' due to its ongoing financial losses prior to the bankruptcy proceedings.
According to the spokesperson for the provisional insolvency administrator, the Essen location has been closed since the past weekend. This establishment, which employed eleven staff members, was one of the smaller units within the chain. The employees have since been released from their duties, taking to Instagram to bid farewell to their customers: 'Hola amigas und amigos, unfortunately, we had to close our operations.'
In a similar vein, the Sausalitos branch on Oranienburger Straße in Berlin is also facing closure due to poor economic performance. The spokesperson confirmed that the four employees at this location have already been informed about the decision. It has been highlighted that both of these branches should have been closed from a financial standpoint even before the commencement of the insolvency process.
The bankruptcy of the restaurant chain, known for its burritos and jumbo cocktails, was largely triggered by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and an ongoing decline in patronage. Despite this setback, the company's directors remain optimistic about the future of the brand, emphasizing its strong, youthful image in Germany.
In the aftermath of Sausalitos' bankruptcy, the immediate goal is to maintain operations while seeking a prospective investor. The salaries of over 1,000 employees are secured for the next three months through insolvency compensation, ensuring their financial stability until the end of May 2025. It is important to note that other locations, operated by franchisees, are not directly affected by the insolvency proceedings.
The employees who have been released from the Rüttenscheider branch may have the opportunity to continue their work at the Sausalitos restaurant located at the market in Essen, which remains open for the time being.
Founded in 1994 by Thomas Hirschberger in Ingolstadt, the Sausalitos chain was sold to investors in 2014. The current situation underscores the challenges faced by the restaurant industry, as numerous establishments navigate the repercussions of changing consumer behavior and ongoing economic difficulties.
