Deadline for S-Bahn Tender Marks Significant Progress Amid Delays

The tendering process for the operation of significant portions of Berlin's S-Bahn network has reached a crucial milestone following numerous delays. The deadline for submitting binding offers for a new fleet of S-Bahn trains and the operation of two network sections concluded at noon on Thursday.

Ute Bonde, the city's Senator for Mobility, Transportation, Climate Protection, and Environment, announced the development during a session in the Berlin House of Representatives, emphasizing the resolution of previous hold-ups in the process. The repeated postponements of the submission deadline were implemented to ensure legal certainty, to accommodate the new Brandenburg government, and to consider insights from a recent assessment.

This S-Bahn tender is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with a total contract value estimated at a minimum of 5.4 billion euros. The bidding will be divided into four lots, covering the operations of the respective network sections for a period of 15 years, along with the procurement and maintenance of new trains over a span of 30 years.

Until the new contracts are finalized, the operation of the Berlin S-Bahn will continue under interim agreements with Deutsche Bahn. However, concerns remain regarding whether there will be enough operational S-Bahn trains from Deutsche Bahn to maintain service continuity.
