Concerns are rising in Poland following an incident involving a Russian fighter jet that encroached on its airspace over the Baltic Sea. The event took place on February 11, 2025, when a Russian military aircraft reportedly entered Polish airspace in the Gulf of Gdansk.

The Polish military announced that the Russian aircraft had traveled 6.5 kilometers into their airspace, remaining there for just over a minute before changing course. According to the Russian military, this violation was attributed to a malfunction of the aircraft's navigation systems. The Polish Airspace Control reported that they were in communication with Russian authorities, who acknowledged the unauthorized entry into NATO airspace.

Polish officials expressed satisfaction that their air defense systems successfully detected the aircraft and that it promptly exited Polish airspace after being informed of the breach. Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland's Interior Minister, emphasized the effectiveness of their monitoring systems in responding to such incursions.

As tensions in the region continue due to ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, such incidents of airspace violations by Russian military aircraft have become increasingly common. The specific type of fighter jet involved in this latest incident has not been disclosed, but it is suspected to belong to Russia's Baltic Fleet.

The Gulf of Gdansk is a crucial maritime area that opens into the Baltic Sea, bordered by significant Polish cities including Gdansk, Gdynia, and Sopot. The Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which houses the Baltic Fleet, is situated directly across from Gdansk.

In response to perceived threats from Russia, Poland has been significantly enhancing its military capabilities. Recent reports indicate that the country has received American Abrams tanks as part of its defense strategy to counter potential aggression from Moscow.
