Surveillance of Weapon Transport in Germany by Russian Drones

Thu 28th Aug, 2025

Recent reports indicate that Russian drones are allegedly monitoring supply routes for Western military equipment destined for Ukraine, particularly over eastern Germany. According to sources from U.S. agencies and other Western nations cited by The New York Times, these drones are tracking routes utilized for delivering military goods to Ukraine.

The Wirtschaftswoche also corroborated the existence of such surveillance flights. In response to these developments, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed limited surprise, noting that the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) is not tasked with overseeing civilian territories or roadways within Germany in relation to drone activities. He emphasized that the presence of drones over ports and rail facilities was not unexpected and that there are limited measures to counteract such surveillance.

Pistorius elaborated on the challenges in pinpointing the origins of drone operations, which he described as often complicated. He acknowledged that security measures at military installations have been intensified. However, he pointed out that there is a continuous technical struggle between drone operators and the countermeasures available to authorities.

Furthermore, Pistorius condemned the recent severe Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, reiterating that these actions underscore President Vladimir Putin's lack of interest in peace or a ceasefire, characterizing him as an imperialist. Reports from Ukraine indicate that several casualties occurred during the latest wave of Russian bombings, marking the most intense aerial assaults since late July.
