Russia Claims Complete 'Liberation' of Kursk Region from Ukraine

Sat 26th Apr, 2025

The Kremlin has announced that Russian forces have successfully regained control of the Kursk region, claiming the area is now fully liberated from Ukrainian troops. This declaration was made by the Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, who informed President Vladimir Putin about the completion of military operations in the region.

According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the operation aimed at removing Ukrainian armed formations was deemed successful. The statement highlighted that the efforts to dismantle Ukrainian military presence in Kursk were finalized, asserting that the plans of the Ukrainian government to establish a strategic foothold in the area had failed.

This development follows a period of heightened military activity in Kursk, where Ukrainian forces had made significant advances by capturing numerous settlements during a counteroffensive launched in August of the previous year. The Russian authorities had previously indicated that reclaiming Kursk was a prerequisite for engaging in peace negotiations with Ukraine.

While there has been no immediate confirmation from Ukrainian officials regarding the status of Kursk, it has been reported that Ukrainian forces have faced increasing pressures in the region over the past months. President Zelenskyy of Ukraine has consistently referred to the Ukrainian military's strategic maneuvers as successful, despite the challenges faced.

Last summer, Ukrainian troops managed to secure around 1,300 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region, which bolstered morale in Ukraine as they sought to negotiate terms for peace. However, recent developments have altered the landscape, with calls from international leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, advocating for Ukraine to make concessions regarding territories, including Crimea, which has been under Russian control since 2014.

The geopolitical situation continues to evolve, as the international community watches closely to see how these events unfold and what implications they may have for future peace talks and regional stability.
