Rheinmetall Expands into Satellite Production

Thu 8th May, 2025

Rheinmetall, Germany's largest defense contractor, is broadening its operations to include satellite production, recognizing the increasing importance of space-based data. The Düsseldorf-based company has made strategic moves in the sector, including acquiring a stake in the Finnish satellite manufacturer Iceye and securing distribution rights.

Next year, Rheinmetall plans to commence the production of satellites in Neuss, facilitated by the establishment of a joint venture named Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions. Under this agreement, Rheinmetall will hold a 60% stake while Iceye will retain 40%. This initiative is anticipated to enhance Rheinmetall's capabilities in space technology, aligning with the growing global demand for satellite-based reconnaissance.

The Neuss facility, which currently employs approximately 1,500 staff and primarily operates within the automotive supply sector, will undergo partial transformation to accommodate satellite manufacturing. While the transition is set to begin, it has been indicated that not all operations will shift immediately, allowing for a gradual integration of satellite production.

Rheinmetall's CEO articulated that the joint venture is a strategic response to the escalating requirement for space-based surveillance capabilities among military and security forces worldwide. He emphasized that this venture not only contributes to meeting market demands but also supports the advancement of technology in Germany.

Iceye, based in Espoo, Finland, specializes in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites which offer the unique capability of delivering high-resolution imagery regardless of weather conditions or time of day. These satellites are particularly valuable in military applications, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where the Ukrainian army utilizes Iceye's imagery for reconnaissance.

In addition to its expansion into satellite technology, Rheinmetall reported robust financial performance for the first quarter of 2025, with revenues increasing by nearly 50% compared to the same period in the previous year, reaching EUR2.3 billion. The operational results also showed significant growth, particularly in the military sector, where the operational profit doubled.

The company is well-positioned to meet the demands of a full order book, reflecting the heightened interest in defense capabilities. Rheinmetall's diverse portfolio includes tanks, ammunition, military trucks, air defense systems, and drones, reinforcing its ambition to emerge as a leading player in the global defense industry.
