René Wilke Appointed as Brandenburg's New Interior Minister

Mon 19th May, 2025

René Wilke has been appointed as the new Interior Minister of Brandenburg, a decision announced by the state's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Woidke noted that Wilke is held in high regard by the residents of Brandenburg and praised his skills as an effective crisis manager. Wilke is set to be officially sworn in on Thursday.

Previously, Wilke served as the mayor of Frankfurt (Oder) after being elected to the position in 2018. He became an independent politician last year after leaving the Left Party, citing disagreements with the party's stance on the Ukraine conflict as a key reason for his departure.

Wilke's appointment follows the resignation of the former Interior Minister Katrin Lange, also from the SPD, who stepped down amidst controversy surrounding the classification of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a far-right entity. Lange faced criticism particularly for her dismissal of the head of the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Jörg Müller. She characterized her resignation as a result of a breach of trust.

The Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution officially designated the AfD as a securely far-right party on April 14, but Lange claimed she was not informed until a month later. According to existing guidelines, the head of the Office is permitted to issue such classification documents without the need for prior consultation with the minister, a policy established by Lange's predecessor, Michael Stübgen of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). This approach was intended to safeguard the Office's professional assessments from political interference and to preclude the AfD from alleging governmental manipulation of intelligence services.

Investigative reports suggest that Lange and Müller had become so embroiled in disputes regarding the AfD's classification that productive dialogue became impossible. Furthermore, these investigations raise significant doubts about Lange's narrative, with sources from the Brandenburg Office indicating that efforts to engage Lange in the decision-making process had been ongoing for weeks without success. Some critics have even accused her of misrepresenting the circumstances surrounding her resignation.

As Wilke prepares to assume his new role, the political landscape in Brandenburg continues to evolve, particularly regarding the handling of the AfD and issues of public safety. His experience as a local leader and his non-partisan stance may play a crucial role in navigating the complexities of the state's political environment.
