René Obermann Set to Become SAP Supervisory Board Chairman in 2027

Tue 15th Apr, 2025

SAP has announced a significant leadership decision as René Obermann is slated to join the company's Supervisory Board next year, with plans to assume the chairmanship in 2027.

The nomination will be presented to shareholders at the upcoming annual general meeting. Initially, Obermann will not take on the chair role immediately; instead, there will be a transition period aimed at ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities. The current interim chairman, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, is expected to extend his mandate for an additional year until 2027, during which Obermann and Ala-Pietilä will serve together on the board.

Obermann, who has an extensive background in technology and corporate governance, is recognized for his impressive career trajectory, including his tenure as the former CEO of Deutsche Telekom and his current roles as chairman of Airbus SE and vice-chairman of IONOS SE. According to Ala-Pietilä, Obermann's qualifications stem from his deep understanding of market dynamics and customer needs, which make him a suitable candidate for the role.

It is noteworthy that Obermann was not the initial choice for the chairmanship. When Hasso Plattner, SAP's majority shareholder, announced his intention to step down from the role he held for over two decades, Punit Renjen was presented as the successor. However, Renjen's tenure was cut short due to reported conflicts with SAP's operational strategies, leading to his departure in February 2024. Ala-Pietilä then stepped in as interim chairman.

As the company navigates these transitions, the focus remains on ensuring effective leadership and strategic direction within the organization.
