René Benko, the founder of the Signa Group and once a prominent figure in the real estate sector, has been arrested in Austria, according to the public prosecutor's office. The authorities cited both the risk of evidence tampering and the possibility of further criminal activities as reasons for the arrest.
The 47-year-old is facing severe allegations from the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA), which claims that Benko may have concealed his assets in the wake of his company's bankruptcy. It is alleged that he diverted funds held in a foundation to shield them from scrutiny by authorities, creditors, and court-appointed administrators.
Investigations are not limited to Austria; similar inquiries are underway in Germany. The WKStA has formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in collaboration with prosecutors from Berlin and Munich to facilitate a more streamlined and effective cross-border investigation.
Creditors are seeking to recover approximately EUR2.4 billion from Benko, whose Signa Group once boasted an extensive portfolio, including ownership of renowned German department store chains like KaDeWe and Galeria. However, the combination of rising interest rates, energy costs, and construction expenses led to the collapse of his complex corporate structure. The appointed insolvency administrator has confirmed the staggering total of claims against Benko.
Additionally, Benko is under scrutiny for potential fraud connected to state aid received during the COVID-19 pandemic. Investigators are examining whether funds intended for economic support were misappropriated for the luxury "Chalet N" located in the ski resort of Lech am Arlberg.
Prior investigations had already highlighted allegations of credit fraud and attempted bribery. Furthermore, Benko is suspected of unlawfully transferring portions of his wealth to evade legal obligations. His legal representatives have denied these accusations.
