In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian air defense forces reported a record number of Russian drone attacks over the weekend. According to Ukrainian authorities, a civilian was killed in the city of Krywyj Rih due to rocket and drone strikes, with multiple injuries recorded in the aftermath. The Ukrainian Air Force revealed that Russia launched a total of 267 drones during the night, marking the highest number of aerial assaults in a single night since the invasion began on February 24, 2022.
Of the drones deployed, Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 138, while another 119 drones vanished from radar, likely due to electronic warfare tactics. The fate of the remaining drones remains unclear. In addition to drone attacks, Russia reportedly fired three Iskander missiles at various targets across Ukraine.
Regions across the country were affected, with damage reported in Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia. In the capital city, air raid alerts lasted for six hours during the attacks, which struck residential buildings and vehicles, as noted by the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko. Fortunately, early reports indicated no casualties in Kyiv despite the extensive damage.
In the southern region of Odessa, a drone strike caused a fire in a private residence, injuring three individuals, as reported by regional governor Oleh Kiper. The situation underscores the ongoing peril faced by civilians in conflict zones.
On the other side of the conflict, Russian officials claimed to have shot down 20 Ukrainian drones during the same night. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that these aerial vehicles were intercepted across six different regions of the country.
This recent surge in drone warfare highlights the increasingly sophisticated tactics being employed by both sides as the conflict continues to evolve. The use of drones has become a central element of the military strategies in this ongoing war, leading to significant implications for the safety and security of the civilian population in affected areas.
