Putin Asserts Russian Claim Over Ukraine During Economic Forum

At the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his stance on Ukraine, asserting that the country is an integral part of Russia. He claimed that wherever a Russian soldier treads, that territory belongs to Russia. Putin emphasized that while Russia acknowledges Ukraine's right to sovereignty, he believes the country must revert to its status as a neutral state, as declared in 1991 when it gained independence from the Soviet Union.

Putin's comments come amid ongoing military operations in Ukraine, where Russian troops are reportedly establishing a buffer zone in northeastern regions, including the area around Sumy. He indicated that, while there is no immediate plan to capture Sumy, he does not rule out the possibility of advancing toward the city, which is situated only 18 kilometers from Russian positions.

The Russian president also criticized Germany for its potential plans to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, warning that such actions would severely damage bilateral relations. He characterized NATO's expansion as a direct threat, insisting that Russia would not tolerate Ukraine's accession to the alliance.

In light of stalled negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg has met with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, raising concerns over the escalating crisis and the need for careful management to avoid further conflict.

Meanwhile, Russian drone and missile strikes have targeted the energy infrastructure in the Poltava region, causing damage and injuries, according to local military officials. These attacks follow a trend of intensified Russian assaults, which have included hundreds of drone deployments in a single night.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to Putin's statements by accusing him of lacking a genuine desire for peace, citing ongoing threats from Russia. Zelenskyy highlighted the necessity for Ukraine to enhance its aerial defense capabilities against increasing drone attacks, which have recently resulted in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
