Massive Protests Erupt Against AfD Politicians in Görlitzer Park

In a significant display of dissent, approximately 300 individuals gathered in Görlitzer Park to protest the visit of two politicians from the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. The demonstration, fueled by anger against the ongoing construction of a fence around the park, aimed to voice opposition to what many perceive as rising right-wing rhetoric.

The AfD representatives, Thorsten Weiß and Alexander Bertram, arrived at the park on Tuesday morning and were met with a cacophony of boos and whistles from the crowd. As the politicians made their way through the park, they encountered another group of approximately 200 demonstrators who continued to express their discontent loudly. Reports indicated that one protester spat at one of the AfD politicians, resulting in another arrest, according to police sources.

The visit by Weiß and Bertram was framed as an effort to assess the park's conditions, which they described as a "blemish on a capitulating state." They claimed to seek firsthand insight into both the criminal activity and environmental state of the area, expressing concern over safety and cleanliness.

The controversy surrounding the park has been heightened by the Berlin Senate's decision to erect a fence and restrict access during nighttime hours. Officials argue that these measures are necessary to combat drug dealing and violence that have reportedly proliferated in the park. Following multiple delays, construction commenced last week, with plans for the foundational work already underway, as stated by Ute Bonde, the Environment Senator.
