Thousands of Mugs Sent as Protest Against Friedrich Merz

Wed 12th Mar, 2025

In a notable protest against Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a large number of packages filled with mugs have been delivered to the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, the party's headquarters in Berlin. This action is a direct response to a controversial statement made by Merz during a campaign speech in late February, where he remarked on wanting to represent the majority of the population who 'have all their mugs in the cupboard.'

The sight of numerous containers labeled 'Deutsche Post' piled up outside the CDU headquarters is striking. Initially, there were eight large containers, and while the number has now reduced to two, they remain filled to capacity with shipping boxes containing a significant quantity of mugs sent by concerned voters. Estimates suggest that the total number of porcelain mugs could range from several hundred to potentially thousands.

The initiative was sparked by journalist Silke Burmeister, who encouraged followers on social media to participate in the protest under the hashtag #MyMugForMerz. Many individuals joined in by wrapping old mugs in newspaper, placing them in shoeboxes, and addressing them to the CDU's headquarters. Some participants even included brief notes, expressing sentiments such as, 'Here's a mug for your cupboard - we've had enough.'

This protest not only served as a political statement but also allowed participants to declutter their own kitchenware. Items that were once taking up space--such as promotional mugs or unwanted gifts--were repurposed into a form of political commentary aimed at the conservative leadership.

Other social media users contributed to the movement by utilizing hashtags like #AllMugsInTheCupboard. This included various accounts that shared videos questioning the number of mugs the CDU currently possesses, reflecting a humorous yet pointed critique of Merz's remarks.

Inquiries directed to the CDU regarding the total number of mugs received and their intended use have thus far gone unanswered. It remains to be seen how the party will respond to this unusual form of protest, as voters continue to express their dissatisfaction with Merz's comments and the party's approach.
