Proposed Emergency Shelter for Homeless in Steglitz Kreisel

Mon 31st Mar, 2025

The Steglitz Kreisel, a prominent landmark in the southwestern district of Berlin, may soon house a new emergency shelter for the homeless. This initiative has been proposed by Tim Richter, the district's Social Affairs Councillor. The potential site for this cold weather assistance facility is located on the ground floor of the Steglitz Kreisel, conveniently situated near the Steglitz Town Hall.

The building complex, recognizable by its unfinished tower and distinctive steel skeleton, is owned by the Adler Group. According to Richter, the real estate company acknowledges its social responsibility within the community. Preliminary discussions have taken place regarding the use of the ground floor space for this shelter, aimed at serving the needs of the homeless during the winter months of 2025-2026.

A representative from the Adler Group has confirmed ongoing dialogues with the Berlin cold weather assistance program and the district authorities concerning this initiative. While no agreements have been finalized, there is mutual interest in moving forward with the project. The urgency of establishing a new shelter is exacerbated by the imminent closure of an existing facility in Wannsee, which currently offers 30 beds but is facing significant structural issues.

The new accommodation at Steglitz Kreisel is anticipated to provide more beds than the current facility. Renovation efforts on the 1980-era building have been underway for several years, although progress has stalled. Originally intended for office use, the building may eventually transition to include residential units, contingent on the Adler Group's decisions regarding its future.

As discussions continue, the district is making strides toward securing a viable location for homeless assistance, addressing an urgent community need as winter approaches.
