Link Found Between Proinflammatory Foods and Increased Mortality in Colon Cancer Patients

Thu 5th Jun, 2025

Recent research indicates that dietary choices may significantly influence survival rates in patients diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. A study involving over 1,600 participants revealed that those who consumed higher amounts of proinflammatory foods faced an 87% increased risk of death compared to those who limited such foods.

Proinflammatory foods are known to trigger inflammatory responses in the body, which can lead to chronic inflammation linked to various diseases, including cancer. This finding underscores the importance of dietary habits following cancer treatment, as patients often seek guidance on how to minimize their risk of recurrence and enhance survival rates.

The study was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago and is considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. Participants were part of a phase 3 clinical trial, and their dietary intake was monitored during and after their treatment. Results indicated a clear correlation between a proinflammatory diet and increased mortality during the study period.

Interestingly, the use of the anti-inflammatory medication celecoxib among some participants did not alter the relationship between dietary choices and survival outcomes. However, physical activity emerged as a beneficial factor. Patients who engaged in regular exercise exhibited better overall health outcomes.

Experts highlight that while inflammation is a natural bodily response to injury or illness, excessive and prolonged inflammation can contribute to disease progression, including cancer. Prior research has suggested that inflammation may facilitate cancer growth and metastasis. Some anti-inflammatory medications have been shown to lower the risk of cancer recurrence post-treatment.

Common foods associated with promoting inflammation include:

  • White bread
  • Sugary beverages
  • Fried foods, such as French fries
  • Processed meats, including hot dogs
  • Alcohol

Conversely, anti-inflammatory foods that may be beneficial include:

  • Dark leafy greens
  • Various vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon

Healthcare professionals often recommend the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in anti-inflammatory ingredients, as a dietary approach for patients. Experts emphasize the importance of adopting a consistent dietary pattern rather than focusing on individual 'superfoods' to combat inflammation.

According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer affects approximately 150,000 individuals in the United States annually and is the second leading cause of cancer-related fatalities for both genders, with an estimated 52,900 deaths projected this year. For those diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, the average five-year survival rate stands at about 73%.

Future research will continue to explore the impact of diet and lifestyle on cancer outcomes, including studies focusing on younger patients and those with advanced stages of the disease.
