Residents in Southeast Berlin are finally regaining access to electricity after a severe power outage that lasted nearly 60 hours. This disruption affected approximately 50,000 customers, marking the longest such incident in over 25 years. The outage stemmed from an extremist arson attack that damaged multiple high-voltage power lines in the Johannisthal area of the Treptow-Köpenick district.
The fire, which took the firefighters an hour to extinguish, resulted in widespread impact, affecting not only homes but also essential services. Local shopping centers, S-Bahn stations, and several schools remained closed during the outage, while nursing homes faced challenges due to the lack of electricity. Additionally, the disruption led to significant issues with mobile phone connectivity, limiting access to emergency services.
In response to the crisis, the network operator, Stromnetz, implemented a temporary solution by connecting two nearby power lines to restore service to affected areas. The swift action involved collaboration among various agencies, including the fire department, police, and the Technical Relief Organization, alongside local government authorities.
Authorities are investigating the incident, with preliminary findings indicating that the arson attack was carried out by left-wing extremists. An online claim of responsibility for the attack has been deemed credible by officials, drawing parallels to a similar incident earlier this year near the Tesla factory in Brandenburg. Berlin's Interior Senator highlighted that the attackers demonstrated considerable criminal intent and operational proficiency.
As investigations continue, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this unprecedented event, emphasizing the critical need for security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
