In a recent session of the Brandenburg Landtag, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and the Association of German Oil Refiners (BSW) have jointly urged the local government to advocate for the termination of the oil embargo imposed on Russia. This call comes amid increasing concerns regarding the operational viability of the PCK refinery in Schwedt, a critical supplier of oil for northeastern Germany.
Reinhard Simon, a representative from BSW, emphasized the urgent need for a strategic approach rather than mere verbal commitments. He pointed out that the refinery is struggling economically due to insufficient quantities and quality of crude oil arriving in Schwedt, which is essential for maintaining efficient operations.
The AfD has proposed a formal request for the Brandenburg government to work on a federal level to ensure a continuous supply of Russian crude oil to the Schwedt facility. According to AfD member Norbert Rescher, reviving deliveries from Russia should be considered without restrictions. He noted that the current situation, where the refinery processes an array of different crude oil types, is leading to increased operational costs and inefficiencies.
The PCK refinery, once solely reliant on Russian oil supplied via the Druschba pipeline, has faced significant challenges since the German government decided to halt imports from Russia in early 2023 as a response to the country's military actions in Ukraine. This shift has forced the refinery to explore alternative sourcing options, resulting in financial losses.
Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, has recently ruled out any immediate lifting of the embargo, citing ongoing valid sanctions against Russia due to its continuing military aggression. However, Woidke did mention that should peace be established in Ukraine, he would welcome the idea of resuming oil imports from Russia.
Robert Habeck, the acting Federal Minister of Economic Affairs, has opposed any discussions around re-establishing Russian oil imports, stating a clear stance against purchasing any fossil fuel from Russia during the current conflict.
In alignment with Woidke's viewpoint, Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Daniel Keller, expressed that the future possibility of utilizing Russian oil could represent a significant opportunity for Schwedt, contingent on a resolution to the conflict and the cessation of EU sanctions against Russia. Nevertheless, CDU lawmaker Frank Bommert acknowledged the complexities involved, suggesting that the AfD and BSW may be underestimating the challenges of reinstating a straightforward supply of Russian oil.
The ongoing debate highlights the critical intersection of energy policy and geopolitical tensions, as stakeholders seek solutions to sustain local economic interests while navigating the broader implications of international relations.
