Guidelines for Germans Seeking to Leave Israel Amid Rising Tensions

Tue 17th Jun, 2025

The German Foreign Office has issued urgent recommendations for citizens currently in Israel, Iran, and neighboring countries to register on the Elefand list, which helps authorities maintain contact in emergencies. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office noted that approximately 4,000 Germans in Israel and nearly 1,000 in Iran have registered, and the numbers are increasing. While there are no immediate evacuation plans, all options remain open.

As the security situation in the region remains precarious, particularly with ongoing conflicts and heightened military activity, the Foreign Office advises German nationals to assess their circumstances and consider their options for leaving the region. In some cases, individuals may need to rely on available protection and follow the guidance of local authorities.

To facilitate departures, the Foreign Office plans to operate a charter flight from Amman, Jordan to Frankfurt. This flight, scheduled for midday on Wednesday, requires travelers to arrange their own transportation from Israel to Jordan, which can be done via various border crossings. Germans traveling to Jordan will need a visa, which can typically be obtained online. However, amid the current crisis, Jordanian officials may issue visas upon arrival in some cases.

Additionally, Germans may also consider exiting through Egypt, where a visa is necessary and can be applied for in advance or obtained upon entry. The Foreign Office has highlighted that individuals should remain vigilant and flexible in their travel plans as the situation can change rapidly.

In Iran, the situation is particularly dire due to the ongoing conflict, which has led to the closure of airspace, making travel risky. The German Embassy in Tehran is currently closed to visitors, and those still in the country are strongly urged to register on the crisis prevention list and adhere to official guidance. The embassy has advised citizens to leave Iran as soon as it is feasible.

Travel advisories have been updated to discourage all non-essential travel to the entire Gulf region, including popular destinations like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as well as Oman and Jordan. A travel warning has been issued for all of Israel, indicating a significant threat to personal safety.

As a precautionary measure, the largest German airline, Lufthansa, has suspended flights to Israel since early May and has also halted all flights to and from Tehran until further notice.

Given the volatile circumstances, German nationals are advised to stay informed through reliable news sources, comply with local regulations, and avoid large gatherings. It is also essential to refrain from photographing any damage caused by military actions to prevent further complications.
